Your Google Timeline (formerly Location History) is a record of everywhere your phone has been. MapRecap reads that export locally and turns it into something useful: a clean list of every time you crossed a border, how long each trip lasted, and how many days you spent in each country — the kind of "days abroad" tally you need for tax residency, visa limits or a year in review.
How do I export my Google Timeline?+
On newer phones Timeline lives on the device: open Google Maps → your profile → Your Timeline → the settings menu → Export Timeline data, which saves a JSON file you upload here. Older accounts can still export via Google Takeout (Location History).
What counts as a "day abroad"?+
MapRecap counts each calendar day you were outside your home country. Both the day you leave and the day you return usually count as days abroad, which matches how most tax-residency and visa day-count rules work.
Is my location data private?+
Yes. Your Timeline file is parsed entirely in this browser tab and is never uploaded to any server. Close the tab and nothing remains.
Which export formats are supported?+
Both the Android on-device Timeline export (semanticSegments) and the older iPhone / Takeout Location History JSON. Just pick the file and choose your home country.
