How it works
From your travels to an animated map
Two ways to start
- Upload your Google Timeline — drop your location-history JSON export and MapRecap reconstructs every trip automatically.
- Build a trip by hand — add stops one by one, pick a transport mode between each, and skip the upload entirely.
See it move
The headline feature is the animation. Any journey replays as a 2D map animation — with a moving vehicle that follows real roads for car and bike legs — or as a cinematic 3D flyover. Export either one as a video, free.
What MapRecap figures out
- Border crossings — entries and exits are detected from your location pings using country polygon data.
- Days abroad — year-by-year totals, broken down by country, ready for visa applications and residence permits.
- Schengen flags — trips that involved non-Schengen countries are marked.
- A year recap — a shareable story image of where your year took you.
Exporting your Google Timeline
- Open Google Maps → Settings → Your data in Maps → Download your Maps data.
- Choose the location-history / "Places visited" data and export it as JSON.
- Drop the file onto MapRecap and enter your home country ISO code (e.g. PL, UA, DE).
Both Android and iPhone export formats are supported.
And your privacy?
Your Timeline is parsed entirely in your browser — no uploads, no accounts. The one exception is road routing for car and bike trips. Read the details →
