Everything MapRecap draws into a file you download — a video, a story image, a passport — comes from public-domain or openly licensed sources. This page lists them, starting with the elevation data used by the GPX 3D flyover.
Credit statements quoted on this page are reproduced exactly as their licensors require, so they are not translated.
The credit line in terrain videos
When the area shown in a GPX 3D flyover video uses elevation data whose licence requires a credit, every frame — the live preview and every exported frame — carries a data credit at the bottom. It always starts with this line:
Elevation: Mapzen Terrain Tiles on AWS, all elevation data modified by MapRecap · SRTM, GMTED2010, 3DEP courtesy of USGS · ETOPO1: NOAA NGDC · Full credits: maprecap.com/credits
Then it adds one line for each regional data source whose coverage overlaps the area shown in the video. Those lines are listed below as "Line in the video".
You may use terrain videos commercially, like every MapRecap export, as long as this credit stays visible: do not crop, blur or cover it. A video whose area uses only US public-domain data (SRTM, 3DEP, GMTED2010, ETOPO1 — for example most of the United States, Latin America, Africa and Asia) carries no credit at all, because those sources do not require one.
Elevation data
The terrain comes from Mapzen Terrain Tiles, a global elevation mosaic hosted on AWS. The tiles combine the datasets below; which ones a video uses depends on where the route goes.
Terrain Tiles (Terrarium encoding)
Global elevation tiles built by Mapzen’s joerd in 2016–2017 from the sources below, encoded as Terrarium RGB PNGs. Registry citation: replace DATE with the date of your export.

SRTM · GMTED2010 · 3DEP (formerly NED)
SRTM covers land between 60°N and 56°S; GMTED2010 is the global low-zoom layer; 3DEP covers the United States. Credited in the first line whenever a video carries a credit; on their own they require none.

Modifications
None of the elevation data is shown as originally published. Before it reaches your video it has been:
- resampled and reprojected to the Web Mercator grid, and encoded as Terrarium RGB tiles — by Mapzen (joerd);
- mosaicked with the other elevation datasets listed above, so neighbouring sources blend into one surface — by Mapzen (joerd);
- cropped to the area around your route and vertically exaggerated — by MapRecap;
- shaded (hillshade, contour lines, elevation colouring) and stylised with the look you choose — by MapRecap.
No endorsement, no warranty
None of the data providers listed here endorses MapRecap, its videos or their use. The elevation data is provided "as is", without warranties, and the rendered terrain is a visualisation: it is not accurate enough for navigation, planning or safety decisions.
